It’s true that in recessionary times when the dollar loses its value, gold has been a valuable hedge, and it’s playing that role again now. If you’ve been considering selling your old gold jewelry, it’s as good as cash in your pocket, but you want to be smart about it. Here’s how.

Be Realistic

Yes, because of the historic high value of gold, now is as good a time as any to get rid of your unwanted gold, but be realistic about how much you will actually get for it. 24K gold will fetch the highest price, obviously because it is the purest form of gold: the fewer karats in your gold, the lower the cash amount you will get for it. Even so, you will never get close to what you paid originally, so don’t imagine you’re going to get super rich.

Do You Really Want to give it Up?

Bad times come and go, and the economy is going to rebound eventually. If possible, don’t sell your gold jewelry if it has great sentimental value: you may be sorry that you did it someday. Good candidates for sale are mismatched jewelry pieces such as earrings, or gifts from an ex-husband!

Be Smart About Where You Sell

Do not get sucked in by companies that urge you to mail your jewelry off to them in an envelope! You have absolutely no guarantee of ever seeing any money back from it. Pawn shops are also a no-no. It is best to visit a local numismatic exchange or jeweler who will give you the best price for your goods and whom you can trust.
