Trends come and trends go, but one trend has remained constant for centuries: gold jewelry designs. Whether for men or women, worn with a pendant or alone, gold pieces add instant oomph to any ensemble.

Here are the different chain types you will typically see in gold necklaces:

Bar and Bead: Bar-shaped or round, rectangular links are interlinked with golden bead links to make the bar and bead pattern. This chain type is often used in necklaces that utilize contrasting golds, such as white gold and yellow gold.

Box: Tiny box-shaped links are connected to make the box chain. This chain type is best worn with a pendant.

Cable: Oval links are connected alternately, giving the chain a classic appearance.

Curb: Flattened, circular links are connected to make the curb chain. This chain type is best worn by men. You will often see it in hip hop gold jewelry designs, except that the links are much bigger.

Fox: Two strands of gold are bound together to give this chain its braided look.

Herringbone: This chain is often worn without a pendant because there is no need for one! It looks intricately woven and lends a rich, lustrous look to any wardrobe.

Marine: Oval links with either a bar or a post centered vertically between each link are interlinked to make this chain type, which looks just like a standard oval chain except that it’s more intricate-looking.

Rolo: Simple but stunning are two words that describe the rolo type. This chain is made of circular links that are as broad as they are sturdy.

Rope: As implied by the name, this chain looks just like a rope. It’s best worn with a pendant.

These are only some of the most common chains you will see in gold jewelry designs.
