For all practical purposes there are two basic or traditional metals that are used in charm bracelets and these two metals have been in use for centuries. In general there are yellow gold charm bracelets and their sterling silver equivalents. Both types of metals are durable, beautiful and practical, and which is best for you is really a personal preference.

While historically yellow gold charm bracelets have been the tradition, this is certainly not the case anymore. Generally yellow gold charm bracelets can be traced back to the ancient Pharaohs of Egypt, making them the true original charm bracelets. Gold charm bracelets can be several different types from 10k all the way up to 18k. The higher karat number the more actual gold is in the metal, resulting in a richer color but also a slightly softer surface which may lead to more scratching and damage with daily wear.

As can be imagined, the more gold content in the bracelet the higher priced the charm bracelets will be. Often people select the more expensive bracelets for evening or special occasion wear but also have a lower cost 10k or 14k bracelet for everyday wear.

Another option from yellow gold is to go with white gold charm bracelets. White gold is durable, brilliant yet has a natural softer glow. White gold charms are becoming more popular but are still not as common as yellow gold or sterling silver.  White gold tends to be more costly than yellow gold bracelets for the same types of designs.

Two tone charm bracelets that combine white gold and yellow gold or yellow gold and sterling silver are very much in demand. These bracelets are typically double or triple strand or link, providing a bracelet that is not flat but more rounded in shape. Links on these types of bracelets can also vary between yellow and white gold for a striking pattern.

Platinum is another option for a type of metal in charm bracelets. These will definitely be the more expensive types of bracelets but the metal itself is very durable and will last a lifetime. They will typically not require any cleaning and are extremely strong and resistant to scratching or damage.

For a gleaming, beautiful and less expensive option you may wish to consider charm bracelets in sterling silver. These bracelets will require minimum cleaning, typically with soap and water or a jeweler’s cloth to stay in great shape.

Jewelry, particularly charm bracelets, needs to be made with both beauty and wearability in mind. Buying the most expensive metal may not be possible, but look for good quality and workmanship in the bracelet as well as the type of metal used. Charm bracelets from reputable manufacturers are always the best option but be sure to shop around and find just the bracelet that you want.
